Survey and Study the Impact of Tsunami towards the coral reefs around Similan Islands on January 4th – 9th , 2005


Further from the meeting on December 28th, 2004, the first project started with 80 Professional Divers from both local communities and Bangkok. The survey trip was organized by Bangkok Dive Operator Club –BDOC, Dive Operator Club Thailand (Phuket) –DOCT, in cooperation with Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of National Park and Forestry, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Songkla Nakarin University, and Volunteers Divers who are ´reelance Instructors.

During this trip, the survey and data collected covered the whole area of the nine islands of the Similans. The results from this project revealed that the damages were very limited to certain sites. Overall, damages were only about 10-15%. There were some sites that had more of the damages (over 60%) such as China Wall (Island No. 4), Snapper Alley (Island No. 9) and Christmas Point ( Island No. 8).
